BARRY WINDSOR-SMITH was more than Valiant’s lead artist during its formative years. In addition to drawing and co-plotting SOLAR: Alpha & Omega, BWS also contributed significantly to the stories, the scripts, and character development of the titles he helped create.
Presented here for the first time is Windsor-Smith’s draft for one of the short story vignettes originally intended as bonus inserts into the main story-line for the collected edition of Alpha & Omega. Says the artist, “By the time of the [publication of the] collected edition [co-author] Jim Shooter was long gone, and I had one foot out the door myself.”
Their elaborate plans for special inserts and character defining vignettes would have made the Alpha & Omega Collected Edition an extraordinary event in Valiant’s short but meritorious history. “But the creative ideals underlying Valiant had degenerated into hustling and profiteering,” says BWS, “any altruistic visions were burning on a pyre.”
Along with BWS’ Solar 9 plot are panels as they appeared in 1992, and the original introductory scenes for the unpublished special Collection.
