THE GORBLIMEY PRESS CATALOGUE 1975•1976
Studio is pleased to offer autographed, near mint Artist’s File
In 1974, artist Barry Windsor-Smith, who had become a young superstar in the comic book field with his ground-breaking work on Conan the Barbarian and other titles, abruptly left comics to explore a burgeoning passion for creating single pictures. He founded his own fine art publishing company, The Gorblimey Press (GbP), to produce and sell limited edition prints of his drawings and paintings.
In 1976 BWS published the The Gorblimey Press Catalogue to document the works he created and published during the three years of The GbP. The titles presented include the now classics: The Sepia Horseman; The Four Ages; The Ram and the Peacock; Pandora; The Enchantment; Shelf Stuff; The Devil’s Lake; and others. Each work is presented on a single page in black and white halftone on a fieldgreen background. Each piece is annotated with production and publishing details.
The Gorblimey Press Catalogue includes a six page autobiographical essay, accompanied by photos of the artist. In “A Fine Madness,” Windsor-Smith expresses his motivations for leaving the field of commercial comics, and his founding of The GbP. Barry also elaborates on the background and creative process behind most of the works presented in the catalogue.
The examples offered here of this hard to find vintage publication are from archival stock recently found in the printer’s original carton. Aside from very slight aging of the paper due to thirty years’ storage, they are in ‘as new’ condition. There are no finer copies in existence. BWS will autograph each copy sold.
Supplies are limited. The price is $65 each, plus $20 for USPS Priority Mail shipping within the US.
